Sound Work
Electroacoustic composition
This work explores the gradual densification of the inner world. This observation originated from my experience of persistent psychosomatic symptoms caused by anxiety. Rather than representing illness itself, I am interested in how prolonged sensory disturbance can alter one’s perception of inner time. The persistence of these symptoms gradually changed my perception, leading to an accumulation of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations. While the external world remained unchanged, I began to experience my inner world as increasingly dense. Rather than understanding acceleration as an increase in speed, the work approaches it as a transformation of inner time. As sensory experiences and emotions continue to accumulate, time is no longer perceived as a linear flow but gradually becomes an increasingly compressed internal state. Sound is the most suitable medium for this work because this experience is both invisible and constantly changing. The work is composed primarily of field recordings, voice, and synthesized sound. The field recordings were collected from everyday environments, while the voice material includes fragments in multiple languages as well as Japanese narration. Sustained synthesized sounds run throughout the piece, which concludes with the repeated Japanese word for “mother.” Although rooted in personal experience, the work also seeks to respond to a broader perceptual condition. As sensory and emotional experiences accumulate over time, one’s experience of time may gradually diverge from the rhythm of the external world. Through sound, the work attempts to capture a perceptual state of acceleration: a condition in which, while the external world remains unchanged, inner time becomes increasingly dense.
