Are You Listening? explores how everyday speech can become a form of encrypted testimony. Fragments of casual conversation between women often appear light-hearted, yet certain phrases function as signals recognisable only to those with shared experience. Laughter becomes a public surface through which pain can circulate without direct exposure, allowing vulnerability to remain present while avoiding the risks of explicit confession. The composition combines synthetic voice, sparse conversational fragments, and processed water textures. Two female voices read the same text simultaneously in different dialects across the stereo field. Moving between the left and right channels, the voices remain distinct while suggesting a shared experience in which each can inhabit the other’s position. As the work unfolds, layered water sounds gradually expand into a masking field. Speech becomes increasingly obscured, attention shifting away from semantic clarity towards rhythm, timbre, interruption, and resonance. Rather than treating encrypted testimony as hidden language, the work approaches it as a mode of recognition. Meaning does not depend on complete intelligibility but emerges through shared experience. What appears fragmented or ambiguous to one listener may be immediately legible to another, not because the message has been decoded, but because it has already been lived. The composition moves from everyday conversation towards a shared acoustic space. The title, Are You Listening?, is directed less towards those who have failed to hear than towards those who may recognize themselves within the signal. Rather than seeking universal understanding, the work proposes listening as an act of recognition—one voice discovering, within another, that it has never spoken entirely alone.
